Hiring for potential can be challenging. Figuring out the criteria for potential in each role can be tricky. Our team have detailed tips and guidelines on how to hire for potential.

1) Get personal with the role and measures to excel

Understand the work and what core skills a candidate needs to excel in a role. Technical skills that a candidate needs to demonstrate. Then understand the soft skills a candidate needs to possess and then rank these soft skills in level of importance to the job. This way you can understand the measures to excel from most to least important.

2) Define what kind of potential you are looking for.

Take a look at the role and define behaviour, soft skills and core traits that relate to potential. Take a look at the rest of the business, are they any high performers in the role you are hiring for? These could provide a guide for the right combination of behaviour, soft skills and core traits.

3) Test for potential.

Have top performers complete a psychographic assessment, and ensure that it measures their behaviour, soft skills and traits. You can then compare findings and identify commonalities. While each candidate’s profile will be unique, certain traits will consistently emerge, as a predictor of success. For example, your best marketers may have different levels of leadership skills, but they may all have advanced creativity, problem-solving skills and logical reasoning. Leadership skills may become are marker for those types of roles.

3) Create a profile for future hires.

Use assessment information to build an ideal candidate profile for each role based on the common traits among your high performers. That profile can become a blueprint against which to vet future candidates. When screening candidates, even though you may not find a complete fit, those that closely align will have the greatest potential to excel in the role.
